MACON, Ga. -- On Monday, students at Southwest High School's Law Day learned that your circumstance doesn't determine your future.

Students heard from Judge Verda Colvin, the first African American woman on the Macon Judicial Circuit.

She shared her experiences and goals of using the law to help people.

Several students said her message inspired them to keep moving forward.

"I learned a lot," said student Kurt Noles. "She's really inspiring. Made me want to pursue my dreams a little more. There's a few things she said that I'll take for life, I'll take forever in my heart.

"She just really inspired us to be yourself and not to be nothing because anybody can be nothing, so just be something in life," said student Cheritalia Brown.

Colvin also spoke about the 14th Amendment, which gave equal rights to all citizens and the impact it has on American democracy today.
