Byron store clerk shot during attempted armed robbery; suspect sought


BYRON, Ga. -- Authorities in Byron are searching for a man they say robbed a local gas station and shot the 67-year-old clerk in the process.

According to the Byron Police Department, the man came into the Raceway on North Highway 49 at around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday and demanded money from the clerk while pointing a gun at her.

The robber shot one time at the clerk, hitting her in the abdomen. He then ran away from the scene without taking any money from the store.

The clerk underwent surgery after the shooting and remains in the intensive care unit at a Macon hospital.

The suspect is described as being a slender black male about 5'8" to 5'10" in height. His face and head were covered at the time of the robbery.
