Doctor: Parents must watch for kids' dangerous social media challenges
MACON, Ga. - It seems like in this day and age, dangerous social media challenges are part of the internet. New ones continuously pop up.
Recent dangerous challenges include ones that can lead to suffocation, poisoning and even death.
Grandfather Harold Wilder, of Macon, says social media is everywhere in his grandkids life and lifestyle. He's concerned about the challenges, because he believes kids don't know what they're getting into when they participate for social media challenges.
Wilder added, in this day in age, it is a major concern. So parents need to be in tuned with what their kids are doing.
Pediatrician Christy Peterson of Navicent Health says the children's computer-use needs to be on parents' radar, because there are dangers.
She says there can be devastating consequences to participating in these challenges and a little amount of fame isn't worth possible death. The fad doesn't surprise her, but does concern her.
Peterson says you need to talk with your kids about what they're seeing online and discuss how good or bad it is -- what they should or shouldn't be doing.
