1 dead, 2 hurt in morning accident on I-16, authorities seek one driver involved
TWIGGS COUNTY-- A traffic accident in Twiggs County early Wednesday morning left a truck driver dead and two other people hurt.
According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, the accident happened along I-16 westbound just before 6 a.m., between mile posts 11 and 12.
Twiggs County Sheriff's deputies confirm that the driver of a tractor trailer died on the scene as a result of the crash.
Two other people were also taken to an area hospital for their injuries, the status of their medical condition is unknown at this time.
As of about 9:30 Wednesday morning, the Georgia State Patrol is looking for one of the drivers involved in the accident that they say left the scene after it occurred.
Cpt. Darrell Thigpen with the Georgia State Patrol said the vehicle they are looking for is a white tractor with a white trailer that they believe to be a van trailer. He said it should have substantial damage to the back of it.
The driver is described as an approximately 55-year-old white male with a white goatee, about 5'8" tall and weighing between 165 and 190 pounds. At the time of the accident, he was wearing blue jeans with brown boots and a blue t-shirt. Witnesses say he was involved in the crash and hung around for a while after it happened but but was gone when troopers arrived.
Thigpen said authorities want to speak to the man to get a better idea of what happened in the fatal crash and ask him why he left.
GDOT says I-16 Westbound is backed up at least six miles and will take several hours to clear the scene. As of about 9:30 a.m., crews were removing the damaged cars from the scene.
