Around forty firefighters contain fire in Macon
MACON, Ga.-- Fire Chief, Marvin Riggins, said the fire department got a call that a fire engulfed a large commercial building on Broadway at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. He said the fire was contained at around 10:30 a.m.
"There is heavy damage done, to 75% of the building," said Riggins.
Riggins said about 40 firefighters were out fighting the blaze. He said he expects crews to be out all day. Riggins said firefighters were able to contact the owner of the building who said no one should have been inside the building. Riggins said there there were no injuries upon their arrival, but had crews inside checking to make sure. No firefighters were injured either.
Riggins said he believes the fire began on the left side of the large building based on witness statements.
Riggins said this is the second large commercial building fire in the past seven days.
"We have a lot of vacant buildings in the community. We have that on our radar screen as well. We don't know if there is any connection between the two structures at all at this time," said Riggins.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
