MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville is celebrating its impact on the local economy.

On Wednesday, the university broke down the numbers that show just how much of an economic impact GCSU has.

According to the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, the school made a $266 million impact on several counties stemming from Georgia College in fiscal year 2016. This is up from $235 million the previous years.

A lot of this money is spending by students that represent 139 of Georgia's counties.

"So they come from all over, a great number from the metro Atlanta area," said Johnny Grant, director of economic development for Georgia College. "They come here, they spend the weekends. We try to have activities that keep them here in the community, and so they're going to be spending their money."

Part of that impact also comes from the many other jobs in the community that support the students and faculty from the college.
