Georgia National Fairgrounds to open horse shelter for Irma evacuees

MGN

PERRY, Ga. (WGXA) -- The Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry will be opening up beginning on Thursday to act as an equine shelter for horses being evacuated from Florida due to Hurricane Irma.

The center will have 350 available stalls on a first come, first serve basis.

It will open up on Thursday at 8 a.m.

On-site dry camping will also be available for those housing their horses at the fairgrounds. Those who wish to stay on site during the duration of their horses' stay are asked to bring their own generators and basic necessities as well as feed, tack and hay that their horses will need. However, the fairgrounds will provide three bags of shavings per stall for the animals at the time of move in.

Horse owners are asked to have a secondary site ready in case the facility reaches capacity before their arrival in Perry.
