Man charged with murdering nephew after dispute
UPDATE Aug. 14 9 p.m. - Stephens was charged with murder and booked at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center.
A report from the sheriff's office states that Stephens' wife told deputies that she told the men to stop playing cards and Rutherford got upset at her.
Stephens then began arguing with Rutherford, which led to the shooting.
MACON, Ga-- The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide that happened just after 2:00 AM Saturday morning. Chief Coroner Leon Jones said, Antwan Rutherford was shot in the head on John Kennedy Drive. 22-year-old Antwan Rutherford and his Uncle 45-year-old Darnell Stephens had gotten into an altercation outside their home.
According to the Bibb County Sheriff's Office during, the altercation both Rutherford and Stephens retrieved handguns. Then Rutherford and Stephens struggled and that is when Stephens was shot in the left leg and Rutherford was shot in the back of the head by Stephens.
Stephens was taken to Navicent Health Medical center and is listed in stable condition at this time. Rutherford died at Navicent Health at 10:30 a.m.
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office said, Stephens is being charged with aggravated assault and other charges are pending at this time. This is the 16th homicide in Macon this year.
