Laurens County High School coach found dead after rape, sexual assault charges

David Domingue (WGXA)

LAURENS COUNTY, Ga. - A wrestling coach accused of sexual contact with a student has been found dead in his house.

According to a release from the Laurens County Sheriff's Office, they, along with the GBI, were investigating accusations of sexual contact between West Laurens High School wrestling coach Michael Slaughter and a female West Laurens High School student while not on school property.

The GBI obtained arrest warrants Monday for the arrest of Slaughter for rape and sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority.

Slaughter had already resigned from Laurens County High School to take on a position at another Georgia school, said Laurens County Superintendent Dan Brigman.

A Laurens County Sheriff's Office investigator talked to Slaughter on the phone and asked him to come in to the Sheriff's Office. Slaughter said he would come in, but after he didn't deputies arrived at his house and found him dead.

The GBI will conduct the ongoing investigation.

The Laurens County School District Superintendent Dan Brigman gave a statement on the district's Facebook page:

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Slaughter family, our athletes, students, and the West Laurens High School faculty and staff. Mr. Slaughter had previously resigned from his position at West Laurens High School to assume a position in another Georgia school district.
