MACON, Ga. -- Over 200 athletes form 10 different counties came together on Tuesday to prepare for the Special Olympics state games.

Training events were held at the First Presbyterian Day School. Volunteers said the events are great to come out and support those with special needs and to get out of their comfort zones.

Jackie Lindsey from Monroe County explained why she loves to compete.

"It makes me feel like I'm included with everybody and it is fun to be with your friends and make new friends," Lindsey said.

"It's a good opportunity to meet new people and get out of your comfort zone and make the athletes here feel welcomed," said FPD student volunteer Gracie Salde.

Mercer University's basketball team handed out awards to athletes.
