Oak Ridge Cemetery recognized as historic landmark
MACON, Ga. -- The historic Oak Ridge Cemetery is now recognized as a historical landmark.
The Georgia Historical Society erected a new historical marker in Macon recognizing the site as an African-American cemetery established in 1851.
Local leaders and the community came out for the ceremony. Jerrilyn McGhee Larkin said it's good to recognize the history of Macon.
"I have always thought it was a remarkable history and I'm so glad now to see it completed," Larkin said. "And the marker set up, that will let everybody know how important it is."
Elyse Butler with the Georgia Historical Society adds that historical markers are a great way for both visitors and people in the community to gain a greater understanding of the history that happened right in their back yards.
