Man dead after shooting in Macon County, suspect now in custody

MONTEZUMA, Ga. -- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and investigators of the Montezuma police department are investigating a shooting death at a home on Cedar Court in Montezuma.

Montezuma Police Chief Eric Finch said the victim, Willie Simpson, 44, was shot at least once and found laying in the street in front of a home when police arrived to the scene just after 11:30 PM on Sunday night. EMS transported Simpson to the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center where he later died from his injures. The events leading up the shooting are still unclear.

The police department announced that they were looking for Tony Maurice Davis, Jr. in connection to the shooting. Police believe the he and the victim knew each other prior to the shooting.

Shortly after 7:00 A.M. on Monday, Davis arrived at the Montezuma police department and turned himself in where he was questioned and later taken to the Macon County jail.

The GBI office out of Americus is leading the investigation into the shooting and has charged Davis with felony murder.
