Police: Woman hit by police cruiser at Mercer U tending to dog
MACON, Ga. - A woman was hit by a police cruiser at Mercer University Wednesday morning while tending to her dog, which had just been hit by a car, according to state patrol.
It happened around 6 :55 a.m.
Sgt. Kevin Pope of Georgia State Patrol says a Bibb County deputy was traveling on Mercer University Drive near Log Cabin Rd. when a man was trying to flag the deputy to get his attention.
Pope says the deputy became distracted, didn’t see a woman crossing the road into his path and hit her.
She was taken to the hospital.
WGXA spoke to the victim's mother Sherry Valdez, who said her daughter has a fractured skull and torn aorta from the incident. She went into surgery Wednesday morning and got out around 1 p.m.
Pope says the man initially was trying to let the deputy know there was a woman in the road. He added that the woman was in the road because her dog jumped out of her truck and was hit by an oncoming car.
After the incident, the woman was up, walking around talking, Pope said.
Pope added speed wasn’t a factor in the crash.
