Report: Honda Civic, Accord top two cars most likely to be stolen
MACON, Ga. -- The National Insurance Crime Bureau has released their list of top 10 cars most likely to be stolen.
According to the list, the Honda Accord, Honda Civic and Ford pickup were the top three most frequently stolen cars in America in 2016.
However, even if you don't have one of these two cars, it can still be broken into.
Stephen Kinsey, manager of Downtown Motors, said someone tries to steal a vehicle from their lot about once every seven months. He said someone tried to steal a car about three months ago but that law enforcement was able to retrieve it the next day.
Sometimes thieves don't even steal the whole car. Kinsey said that people have even tried to steal the radios and exhaust systems out of vehicles.
Lt. Randy Gonzalez with the Bibb County Sheriff's Office said that although the circumstances can be different case by case, your car can be stolen for a joy ride, for parts or even to be used to commit another crime then dumped.
His top tips to avoid having your car stolen include taking the keys out of the ignition, locking your car and rolling the windows up whenever you get out, parking in well-lit areas with lots of foot traffic and parking close to where you are going.
Additionally, Gonzalez said there are anti-theft mechanisms you can purchase such as steering wheel locks to help prevent your car from being stolen.
Finally, he encouraged everyone to make sure that their car alarm works because that usually deters theft.
