Tractor trailer catches fire in Monroe Co, driver not on scene

MONROE COUNTY, Ga. -- A tractor trailer caught fire in Monroe County on Thursday afternoon.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the accident occurred on Johnstonville Road near River Walk.

The cab of the truck was on fire and no other vehicles were involved, according to the Monroe County Emergency Services.

The driver, Tommy Mashawn Smith, of Baxley, GA, said his brakes failed when he was traveling west on Johnstonville Road. His truck left the roadway and disconnected from the cab. He was not injured.

Smith was arrested and charged with driving on a suspended license and driving in no thru traffic.
