Two arrested after allegedly trying to bring contraband into Telfair State Prison
TELFAIR COUNTY, Ga. -- Two people were arrested recently for allegedly trying to get contraband into Telfair State Prison.
According to the Georgia Department of Corrections, an officer noticed a person standing outside of the prison's fire station with the hood of her car raised on Oct. 8. She told the officer that her car was running hot and that she needed some water.
A responding officer told the woman that she needed to leave after she reportedly refused to give her name and any other information.
A short time later, the car was pulled over by the McRae-Helena police officer, at which time he saw a second person in the vehicle.
The Telfair County Sheriff was driving by and as he came up to assist the police officer, he saw the passenger throw a green duffle bag out of the window of the car. The bag was recovered and inside, authorities reportedly found four packages wrapped in black electric tape containing 19 Verizon flip phones, 13 Verizon touch screen phones, 700 grams of tobacco, 25.8 grams of methamphetamine and an ID belonging to a civilian.
The driver, Shernell McKenzie, and the passenger, Achia Chancey, were both arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine and crossing the guard line with items prohibited by the Warden.
