Mexico, NY church proclaims pro-gun stance
MEXICO, N.Y. —
This is the sign you will see if you drive past the Lighthouse Revival church along Jefferson Street in Mexico.
Pastor Ronald Russell is the man behind the sign.
"There has never been church shootings like there are now, and the only reason I believe there's church shootings now is because they're gun free zones," Russell said.
Russell is taking matters into his own hands to keep his congregation safe. One of them is putting up this sign outside the church in Mexico, stating they are not a gun free zone.
"It takes a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with a gun," Russell said.
Russell says the church has had armed security inside the church for a few years now in hopes of preventing a tragedy.
"Police respond normally within three to five minutes. Response time is just that. They're responding to an incident that took place. So the violence has already happened," he noted.
The pastor says the point of this sign is to warn potential attackers that there is protection inside and to hopefully stop them from ever walking into the church.
"It gives people a sense of safety, and after the last shooting, I think that's well deserved," Russell said.
Pastor Russell, who is a former member of the armed forces, believes guns are the answer to keeping those you love safe.
"I'm a strong believer in the second amendment," he said. "Isn't that the American way?"
