Georgia College's Benson named D-2 player of the year finalist

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- Georgia College senior shortstop Brandon Benson has a chance to take home some big time hardware to end his Bobcat career. Benson was named a finalist for the Tino Martinez Award for the Division II player of the year and the Josh Willingham Award for the Division II most valuable player.

Benson was a first team All-American this past season and hit .395 with 22 home runs, 79 RBIs and 74 runs scored. The shortstop was also named the Peach Belt Conference player of the year. Benson ranks second nationally in homers, third in RBIs and runs scored, fourth with his .819 slugging percentage and 17th with his 85 hits.

The senior from Loganville helped lead the Bobcats to a Peach Belt Conference tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament. Benson is currently spending his summer playing for the Savannah Bananas in the Coastal Plain League.
