JT Thomas named SoCon player of the week
MACON, Ga. -- After a weekend to remember, Mercer Bears catcher JT Thomas has been named the Southern Conference player of the week.
Thomas, a junior from Woodstock, Georgia, batted .562 (9-for-16) with three home runs, eight runs batted in and seven runs scored to help Mercer defeat SEC foe Georgia and sweep nationally ranked East Carolina in a 4-0 week on the road. He was particularly explosive against the Pirates, notching a pair of four-hit games en route to batting 8-for-11 during the series.
A 4-for-4 performance in the series opener was highlighted by a pair of game-tying hits (two-run home run, two-run double) and then an eventual go-ahead two-run home run to help the Bears defeat ECU, 10-7. He added his third home run of the week in Sunday’s series finale to cap a 4-for-5 game at the plate.
The four hits in both games mark a career-high for Thomas, who leads the SoCon in RBIs (27) and ranks among the top-five in runs scored (22), doubles (8) and home runs (7) for the season. He additionally owns a .478 on-base percentage and .770 slugging percentage.
The Orange and Black now have two players – Thomas and Charlie Madden – who have collected SoCon Player of the Week accolades. Danny Edgeworth was named SoCon Player of the Month for February as well.
Thomas and the Bears (17-4) are back at OrthoGeorgia Park this week as they host Florida A&M on Tuesday and Wednesday, opening a six-game home stand.
