GREENVILLE, N.C. -- If the Mercer Bears weren't on the college baseball national radar, they should be now. The Bears beat the eighth ranked team in the country, the East Carolina Pirates, 8-2 on Sunday afternoon completing a three-game sweep on the road.

Junior right-hander Chase Burks (1-0) dazzled in his second start of the season on the mound going seven innings, striking out seven and allowing no runs.

Offensively, the Bears got hot early and coasted toward the end. The Bears scored five runs on four hits in the top of the first inning. JT Thomas continued his stellar series, going 4-for-5 with a home run, two RBI's and three runs scored. In the series, Thomas finished 8-for-11 with three home runs, eight RBIs and seven runs scored in three games.

Mercer is now 17-4 on the season, the best start under head coach Craig Gibson and the second-best start in program history.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they start a two-game series with Florida A&M at OrthoGeorgia Park.
