Georgia well-represented on awards preseason watch-lists
The preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Maxwell Award have been released and there are plenty of Peach State representatives.
University of Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith and defensive tackle Trenton Thompson were named to the Bednarik Award watch list. The award is given annually to the defensive player of the year in college football. Smith led the team in tackles last season with 95 while Thompson added 56 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and five sacks.
The Maxwell Award is presented to the college player of the year. Georgia running back Nick Chubb and Georgia Tech running back Dedrick Mills were both on the preseason watch list. Chubb rushed for over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns after recovering from a torn ACL that caused him to miss much of the 2015 campaign. Mills, only a sophomore, led the team with 771 rushing yards and 13 total touchdowns last season.
Georgia begins their season on September 2 against Appalachian State while Georgia Tech starts their season on September 4 in Atlanta against Tennessee in Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
