MACON, GA -- Andre Taylor is always looking for great competition in the summer.

The head coach has his Central Chargers playing in different gyms during the offseason in an attempt to get better for the grind of a long year.

In the past, Taylor has taken his team as far as Florida State for high school basketball team camp. The last two summers the coach has been able to kill two birds with one stone.

"They have great competition here," Taylor said. "We came here for a couple of games last year. The kids liked it and I asked them this year, and they decided they wanted to come back."

The Chargers only traveled a few blocks over to Mercer University for Bob Hoffman's team camp at Hawkins Arena. Over the past few summers, local teams make the quick trip to Mercer for a few days to compete against some of the top competition from across the state.

For Taylor, he's not only providing good competition for his team, but some peace of mind as well.

"Kids can meet me at the school," Taylor said. "Once we finish I don't have to worry about watching kids at night and making sure they're in bed and not getting into any kind of trouble."

Local teams competing at Mercer this week include Central, Westside, West Laurens, Mary Persons, Stratford, and Warner Robins. The camp concludes Saturday with a championship tournament on the main floor.
