Local teams in action at GHSA dual wrestling state championship
MACON, Ga. -- Four middle Georgia teams competed in the first round of the GHSA team dual wrestling championships. West Laurens and Veterans advanced to the second round to face Heritage and Locust Grove, respectively.
Baldwin and Perry also competed in the first round, but the Braves fell to Woodward Academy and the Panthers lost to Blessed Trinity.
Veterans is still a relatively young program in its seventh season, but assistant coach Tony Monroe says his team has accomplished a lot in a short time.
"I couldn't be prouder of where we're at right now," Monroe said. "Our goal was to be an elite program in this state, and our class. We've got work to do, but we're getting close."
West Laurens head coach Michael Slaughter is no stranger to the state championship, his team has made it to this tournament in each of his four seasons as head coach. But he's hoping this year's team can "keep it up" and finish strong.
"I want them to come away with some hardware," Slaughter said. "It's been three years since we've had some hardware. So it'll be nice for these boys to go out on top, especially my seniors."
West Laurens and Veterans will both wrestle again tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals. Baldwin and Perry will both be in action at 7:30 p.m. also, but in the losers bracket, fighting for a third place finish.
