Veterans clinches region title with doubleheader sweep over Thomas County Central
KATHLEEN, Ga. -- The Veterans Warhawks baseball team clinched its second straight Region 1 AAAAA title by sweeping a doubleheader at home over Thomas County Central today.
This is the sixth region title in the school's eight year history, and the seventh straight 20-win season for the Warhawks.
Pitching was the strength for Veterans today, starting with Ben Gibbs in game one. The Yale commit threw five scoreless innings, striking out nine en route to the win.
Mercer commit Leyton Pinckney paced the team at the plate, collecting three hits and knocking in a run.
The Warhawks needed to come from behind to win the first game. In the bottom of the sixth, Veterans was trailing 2-1. RBIs from Matthew Nunez, Daniel Williams, and Bobby Jury gave the team a 4-2 lead that would hold as the final score.
Daniel Hawthorne took the mound for the Warhawks in game two, and matched Gibbs' performance from game one. Hawthorne struck out eight while allowing two runs (one earned) and one hit to earn the win for Veterans.
Thomas County Central gave the Warhawks five unearned runs in the loss, with the three earned runs coming from Gibbs (one RBI) and Derek Wylie (two RBIs).
Veterans returns to action Wednesday, April 11 when it hosts Lee County at home, first pitch at 6:00 p.m.
