MACON, Ga. -- We now know that baseball is coming to Macon, but as of right now it is not 100 percent official. New team owner Steve DeLay says that there are still some I's to dot and T's to cross in the leasing contract for Luther Williams Field, the home for the new team.

"There's three or four key components," said DeLay. "One of them is just general maintenance upkeep. Cleaning up the bathrooms, cleaning up the field and making sure the field is up to standards for the league."

The field has not been used professionally since the Macon Braves left town in 2003 for Rome. However, DeLay is confident that Luther Williams will be a great home for the new team because it is similar to Grayson Stadium in Savannah, the home of the Bananas.

DeLay and the ownership group wants to make Luther Williams more fan friendly as well.

"We also want to create more fan amenities so it's a better experience for the fans," said DeLay. "Expanding the concessions operation so it's easier for fans to get food and drink."

The seating area also needing some major upgrades before next summer.

"The seating bowl just needs cleaning up," said DeLay. "There's a few spots where the stairs need to be repaired and the seats need to be re-covered. Stuff like that just to really deliver a better fan experience for everyone."

Despite needed upgrades to Luther Williams Field, DeLay said the opportunity for a first-class baseball experience is there.

"We've got to deliver a great product," DeLay said. "We've got to deliver a great fan experience, and if we do that fans will come back. Fans are not obligated to come to games and enjoy the games. We've got to help them see that this is going to be a lot of fun.

DeLay hopes baseball's return to Macon will be the talk of the town during the summer.

"It's going to be great fun-family entertainment, and our goal is to make Luther Williams Field the centerpiece of the community during the summer time," DeLay said.

There is no name for the team yet, but DeLay said he has a few ideas in mind already and will also be asking the fans their ideas.
