MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- Students from across the state participated in the eighth annual Georgia Walk to School Day on Wednesday.
Baldwin County students celebrated by unveiling the completed Safe Routes to School sidewalk and pedestrian bridge project.
The $1 million project connects numerous schools on and around Blandy Road and encourages children to walk and bike to school safely.
With the increasing amount of pedestrians on the roads, the Department of Transportation felt the project was a necessity.
"Really for just pedestrian advocacy, safety, giving kids, the faculty and citizens a good place to walk and recreate here in Baldwin County," said Kyle Collins, communications specialist for the Georgia Department of Transportation.
The project was federally funded and took nearly a year to complete.
