Bibb County Sheriff's Office called the investigation "Operation Blueprint." Officials used wiretaps to listen in on contraband cell phones in jail to execute the operation.

Bibb Sheriff's Office says an "internal and external investigation into known gang leaders, in particular, Jontellis Mathis, who is currently incarcerated in the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center. Mathis was arrested in 2017 for the offense of Aggravated Assault, where he entered a local eatery and shot several patrons. Mathis was identified as the leader of the 'Blacc Team,' which is a subsidiary of the Gangster Disciples."

Deputies added that while Mathis was being investigated, officials performed a sweep where cell phones and other contraband items were confiscated.

“People ask what we’re going to do to address the number of homicides in Macon-Bibb County. Inter-agency cooperation and operations like this are how we combat the gangs that terrorize our community and contribute to a number of our homicides,” District Attorney David Cooke said during a Monday news conference. “This is how we do something about gangs before someone else loses their life.”

"The multiple charges racked up in the over 90-day investigation range from Drug Trafficking to Influencing Witnesses, Aggravated Battery to Conspiracy to Commit A Felony (Murder)," Bibb County deputies say. "The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is proud of the hard work and dedication of our Gang Unit who is committed to keeping our community safe.
