MACON, Ga. (WGXA) -- High school students from Bibb County School District raised their voices in a Poetry Slam centered on 'Social Justice: Silence No More'.

The Jam took place at the Grand Opera House on Friday, allowing students a space to share the lens from which they view social, systemic, and cultural effects within our society.

English Language Arts (ELA) Coordinator, Deborah D. said, "This is the students' opportunity to speak to those things that happened with them...students see, hear, and feel everything going on and a lot of times they don't have a voice in which to speak."

Seniors who participated also earned a chance to win $15,000.00 in scholarship money.

Deborah said often times scholarships are attached to academic standing and test scores, but this option provides scholars who may have average grades, an opportunity to receive financial support toward their future.
