Update Wednesday, January 10 -- 11:30 a.m.
MACON, Ga. - Bibb County Sheriff's Deputies said a road collapsed at an intersection in Macon Tuesday evening. As of Wednesday morning, Georgia Department of Transportation crews were working on the sinkhole on Hardeman Ave.
Deputies have blocked off Middle Street at Hardeman Avenue. Crews are cutting away asphalt around the sinkhole.
GDOT says repairs to the road are expected to last through Friday. GDOT added they believe old Terra Cotta pipe under the road caused the sinkhole.
Macon-Bibb County spokesperson Chris Floore said Macon-Bibb Public Works was planning to find out if a water main break or something else caused the hole in the road.
According to a media release from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office, traffic is being detoured around one lane of traffic in the area.
The release states that the affected lane has been blocked off.
