UPDATE 1 P.M. FRIDAY
MACON, Ga. -- Deputies say Friday that the shooting of a 2-year-old at a Macon home Thursday afternoon was accidental -- not a drive-by.
Bibb County Sheriff's Office says investigation shows that four juveniles ranging from ages 14 to 17 years old were in the house at the time of the shooting -- not adults, as originally believed.
Deputies say it was reported that a 16-year-old male was playing with the handgun when it fired, striking the 2-year-old.
At this time, no charges have been filed. The incident is still under investigation.
The 2-year-old remains at Navicent Health hospital in stable but critical condition.
Anyone with any information in reference to this incident is urged to contact the Bibb Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500 or Macon Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
UPDATE 8 P.M. THURSDAY
MACON, Ga. -- Bibb County Sheriff David Davis says the victim in Thursday afternoon's shooting on Ayers Rd. in Macon is a 1-year-old boy, whose 2nd birthday is Friday.
"Real sad, especially the day before his birthday," said Davis.
A sheriff's office release says that the boy was shot in the upper leg.
Davis says the boy was shot just before 5 p.m. while on the porch of the home in the 2500 block of Ayers Rd.
"A 2-year-old getting shot on the porch sort of shocks the conscience," he said.
Davis said that it appears to have been either a drive-by shooting or from someone near the home's front yard, although officials are still investigating.
"This was not a random act where somebody was just riding by a house and shooting. There was a reason for people to be in a conflict. It's just tragic and senseless and downright stupid," he said.
The boy is in the hospital in critical but stable condition, officials say.
"An innocent child that hasn't done anything to anybody, hasn't had a chance to do anything. He hasn't even made a mark on life yet," Davis said.
Davis says there were also five other kids -- all under eight-years-old -- in the home at the time of the shooting. There were at least two adults in the home as well, who have been taken in for questioning.
"You don't know if you can walk out the streets nowadays and be safe and you know, you should be," he said.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the sheriff's office at 478-751-7500 or Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
