PUTNAM COUNTY, Ga. -- The Putnam County Sheriff's Office is investigating a body found off of State Route 212.

That's according to sheriff Howard Sills, who identified the man as 48-year-old John Martin, of Buckhead in Morgan County.

Sills said the Desert Storm Army veteran was discovered in a rural area of Putnam County near Jones County, not far off the roadway.

A wildlife technician found Martin's empty truck and reported it to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, which later found his body, the sheriff said.

The sheriff said Martin suffered what appears to be a knife wound to his chest, although an autopsy is being conducted to officially determine how he died.

Martin had not been reported missing out of Morgan County, and he left home several days ago in a "disturbed state," Sills said, adding that it looked like he'd been camping in or near Oconee National Forest.
