FORT VALLEY, Ga. -- The Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority hosted a Fort Valley mayoral candidate forum Thursday evening.

Incumbent Barbara Williams and challengers Joeann Dankel, Ralph Davis III and Jamie Johnson spoke about ways to invest in children and boost the city's economy.

Organizer Donnita Bellamy said getting the community involved and informed about local politics is crucial for Fort Valley's future.

"Local politics is very, very important," Bellamy said. "These are the people you can talk to everyday, you can reach out to them, unlike the people in D.C. and the ones in Atlanta. We can't get to them as fast."

Fort Valley's general election voting will take place on Nov. 7. Early voting begins Oct. 16.
