GBI called in after woman armed with knife and blowtorch shot to death by deputies

UPDATE 9:51 p.m.

OCONEE COUNTY, Ga. -- The GBI confirms after preliminary investigations that at 10:26 a.m. Oconee County deputies responded to a domestic dispute call at 1001 Creek View Court in Athens.

Deputies met with the man that made the call who said a woman inside the residence had hit him in the head with an object and was being aggressive towards him.

Deputies entered the residence and located the woman who was armed with a knife and was holding a blow torch.

The GBI reports that Oconee County deputies attempted to resolve the issue by telling the woman to put the knife down for approximately 17 minutes.

Deputies report at one point the woman made a verbal threat and charged at the deputies while still holding the knife.

The GBI reports this is when the deputy fired multiple times, striking the woman. The deputies called for emergency medical assistance and tried provided aid to her but she died on the scene.

The GBI also determined that another man was barricaded inside the home who had been hiding from the woman for several hours due to her aggressive behavior.

No deputies were injured and the woman will be transported to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation and once it is completed it will be turned over to the Wester Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review.

This is the72nd officer-involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2020.

OCONEE COUNTY, Ga. -- Oconee County Sheriff's Office reports a woman was fatally shot by deputies after she charged them with a knife and blow torch.

Deputies report at 10:17 a.m. they were dispatched to a domestic call on Creekview County off of White Oak Drive.

Additional units were requested after they saw the woman was armed with a knife and blow torch.

Deputies say ultimately, the woman was tased and shot by deputies after she charged them with a knife.

Deputies attempted CPR to no avail and she died on the scene.

The investigation of the shooting has been turned over to the GBI.

The GBI stated on Twitter that they are responding to the scene as of 1:19 p.m. and agents are working to gather details.

The Sheriff's Office says that no deputies were injured.

A man who has involved in the domestic issue sustained minor visible injuries prior to deputies arriving to the scene.

Deputies report that no identities will be released as they are pending notification of next of kin.
