GBI investigating officer-involved shooting east of Atlanta
WALTON COUNTY, Ga. (WGXA) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is helping the Walton County Sheriff's Office investigate an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of 26-year-old Chavius Hollis.
A GBI release says that just after 11 a.m. Tuesday, Walton County deputies got a 911 call from a home in the 3700 block of Lovers Lane in Monroe. The call was reportedly about a disturbance caused by a family member with a gun.
The GBI release says that the caller was concerned about the gunman reportedly exhibiting "erratic behavior."
When deputies got to the scene, a family member and law enforcement went into the home, where they encountered Hollis and tried to calm him down.
While deputies were there, Hollis reportedly raised and discharged his gun, striking the family member in the leg. A deputy fired shots and struck Hollis, who died at the scene, the GBI release says.
A GBI medical examiner will perform an autopsy on Hollis. The release says that Hollis' family member is being treated for his injuries and is expected to recover.
No officers were injured in this incident. The GBI will continue an independent investigation. Once that is done, it'll be turned over to the Walton County district attorney's office for review.
