According to preliminary information from the agency, Anthony Donnell Baldwin Jr. reached into the stolen SUV he was driving and grabbed a firearm after a Bibb County Deputy attempted a traffic stop near the Housing Authority Apartment Complex on Felton Avenue at Alabama Street.
Baldwin was shot and taken to the hospital.
Sheriff David Davis said in an interview at the scene, "We want to make sure when they did use that force, they were warranted in doing that."
In a release by the Bibb County Sheriff's Office, investigators said they followed 30-year-old Baldwin Jr. in an unmarked vehicle, without lights or sirens on.
Investigators said they were attempting to locate a person wanted in connection to a November 14, 2022, homicide case. The victim, in that case, was identified as Claudette Brown.
The GBI said a young child was in the SUV but he or she was not injured.
