Kroger on Pio Nono Ave. in Macon to close in April
MACON, Ga. -- The Kroger on Pio Nono Avenue in Macon will close business on April 20, officials said Monday.
Kroger’s Atlanta Division announced the closing of the store at 400 Pio Nono Avenue. It was in business for 21 years.
Shopper Amy Walker said, "It wont be difficult for me to go some place else, but a lot of my friends do not have reliable transportation so this is going to really come between people and decent nutrition. They are going to have to go to a lot more convenience stores. They are not going to be getting the fresh fruits and vegetables that they need. This is devastating."
The Kroger Co. says, "The store has experienced declining sales and negative profit over an extended period and its closure is necessary to make Kroger more competitive in the market."
Elbert Williams, who also shops at the Pio Nono Ave. Kroger, said, "Not only am I sad - I talked to some folks inside and they are too. Some didn't even know the store was closing, and if you look on the doors outside there are not any posters saying that the store will be closing in April."
All 125 associates will be considered for reassignment to other Kroger locations, the company says.
