MACON, Ga. -- June 1 marks the official start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season and Macon-Bibb officials are ready for the 2018 season.

Macon-Bibb Emergency Management Agency is prepared for whatever weather comes to middle Georgia.

Director Spencer Hawkins says his agency meets monthly to go over emergency plans and update his staff on what is forming in the tropics. Hawkins says these meetings are vital when it comes to emergency situations.

"Our emergency management team is made up of 50 different agencies and community partners and over 140 people. They all don't work in emergency management they all don't work for the county. So we need to make sure that we're all prepared and working together as a team to respond effectively for Macon-Bibb."

While the EMA has plans in place in case of a hurricane, Hawkins advises that families begin to put together an emergency plan and emergency kit.

During a dangerous situation in Macon-Bibb County EMA will use MBCAlert to notify you. When a notification about a potential emergency or disaster situation is issued, a registered participant will receive a message on all their registered cell phones, land lines or email addresses. You can register up to four phone numbers, two email addresses and five physical locations.

Free mobile apps also are available for cellphones and tablets that will send push alert messages through the Everbridge App, which is available in the App Store and Google Play.

To register for MBCAlert, go to the MBCAlert Registration Link and follow the registration steps or call EMA at 478-832-6300.

Remember to also stick with WGXA for severe weather and the latest news.
