Macon-Bibb committee approves special election for District 1 seat
MACON, Ga. -- The Macon-Bibb Committee of the Whole Monday morning approved a motion to fund a special election for a District 1 commissioner to replace Gary Bechtel's seat. This development reverse's last week's decision.
Bechtel resigned earlier this month as he prepares to run for District 141 for the Georgia House of Representatives.
The committee approved $19,535 to fund the election, but it's up to the Board of Elections to organize and hold the election.
Now, the funding still has to be approved at next week's full commission meeting. If all goes as planned, the committee hopes to run the election in May.
Commisioner Joe Allen says many people approached him wanting an election and wanting representation for their district.
Commissioner Larry Schlesinger says he thought a May election would not give candidates time to mount a campaign. But he added that voters from District 1 approached him as well saying they want representation now.
Commissioner Mallory Jones is concerned that there's not enough time, but adds that if this is what the people want, it must be respected.
Commissioner Elaine Lucas says she's concerned that Board of Elections won't be able to handle an election in such a short time frame, but she supports the motion.
