Teen from Macon group home shoots juvenile officer on way to youth detention center
HENRY COUNTY, Ga. -- A teenager traveling from a group home in Macon shot a Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) officer on Wednesday.
That's according to a Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) media release, which said the 15-year-old was being transported in a state vehicle when the incident happened at the intersection of Georgia Highway 20 and McDonough-Lovejoy Rd. in Henry County.
A female DJJ officer was driving the vehicle and a male DJJ officer as well as the juvenile - who was being taken to the Martha Glaze Regional Youth Detention Center in Henry County - were in the backseat, the release said.
According to the GBI, the teenager reached into the front seat and grabbed the steering wheel, which caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. That's when the 15-year-old reportedly grabbed the female officer's weapon and shot her in the hand.
After the female officer was shot, the male DJJ officer shot the teenager, the GBI said. He was reportedly taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta to be treated for his injuries and is in DJJ custody.
The GBI said the female officer has been treated and released.
The GBI is investigating the shooting independently and will turn over its completed record to the Henry County District Attorney’s Office for review, the release said.
