MONROE CO., Ga. -- Monroe County Emergency Management Agency said there was a major gas leak on Highway 83 in front of Forsyth Gardens Apartments Wednesday morning.

It happened around 11 a.m. GDOT says clearance time is estimated to take eight hours.

The agency says traffic is being detoured around the gas leak -- access to Forsyth Gardens Apartments and the Forsyth Nursing home is not possible right now.

Highway 83 re-opened around 11:30 a.m. open between Frontage Road and the gas leak site.

Those in the apartment complex and at the nursing home are safe, the agency says. They are sheltering in place and the gas levels are being monitored.

It added that "There may be an interruption in service for those living in Forsyth Gardens that use natural gas appliances. That will be restored when they fix the line. The line that was struck is the service line that runs between the gas main and the apartment complex."
