On Tuesday Republican Danny Mathis won as that party's candidate for Middle Georgia's next District 144 State Representative, while the race between Democrats Jessica Walden and Gregory Odoms was close and will have to be decided this summer.

After Walden and Odoms compete in a runoff election, the winner will run against Danny Mathis in November's election.

District 144 covers parts of Bibb, Houston, Bleckley, Jones, Laurens, Twiggs and Wilkinson counties.

Four Democrats and three Republicans ran to fill Representative Bubber Epps' seat, who didn't run again.

The Republican candidates for District 144 were Danny Mathis, Milton Sampson and Trey Ennis, while the Democratic candidates were Cheyenne Warnock, Gregory Odoms, Jessica Walden and Mary Whipple-Lue.
