Small earthquake outside Macon

A small earthquake struck western Jones County Saturday morning/United States Geological Survey

MACON, Ga - The United States Geological Survey recorded a small earthquake in Jones County just before 10 AM Saturday morning.

The center of the earthquake was near the intersection of Firetower Road and Howard Roberts Road, around 7 miles west of Gray in the western part of the county.

The quake registered a magnitude of 2.4 on the Richter scale. At that magnitude, earthquakes are not felt by many people and do not cause damage.

As of 3:30, three people in the Macon area have reported feeling the quake to the USGS through their website. Using the "Did You Feel It?" feature, they indicated there was only light or weak shaking and no damage.

The USGS estimates that over a million of these small quakes happen each year - in other words, it's not a huge deal.

Did you notice the earthquake this morning? If so, report it to the USGS to help them create a map of what people experienced!
