MACON, Ga. -- Tom Petty, the rock 'n' roll legend who died Monday evening, spent time in Macon during the 70s with the band Mudcrutch as they tried to get signed by Capricorn.

However, they never got a contract.

Edward Grant, Jr. with Grant's Lounge said it's horrible to hear about Petty's passing.

"My first thought when I heard Tom Petty had passed was 'Oh my goodness that's another one this year, you know?'" Grant said. "We've lost so many artists that got their starts at Grant's and he's just one of the great ones that got their start right here on the stage here at Grant's back in 1973 to 1974."

Petty later started his highly successful career with the Heartbreakers.
