MACON, Ga. -- A long-awaited sequel has finally hit the box office and Maconites are geared up to see it.

On the opening weekend of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Macon's Tubman Museum hosted a special screening for its members.

The director of the Tubman, Harold Young, says the movie mirrors what the museum represents: art, history, and culture.

“This movie brings people together,” Young said.

The screening was at Amstar Cinemas in Macon where the seats of two theatres were full of excited moviegoers.

Before the film started, fans were greeted by actress Aba Arthur, who has a role in the new movie.

She calls being a part of the movie along with the day of its premiere an overwhelming experience.

“I was in Walmart recently and there was one of those little stands with the toys and it was all Black Panther. I turned the corner really fast and I just saw a bunch of little black boys and girls playing with the toys and I started sobbing, immediately," Arthur shared.

According to the Associated Press, the Marvel sequel earned $180 million in ticket sales from theaters in the U.S. and Canada plus an additional $150 million from overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $330 million. The cultural phenomenon has the 2nd biggest debut of 2022.
