Deputies: 2 arrested for up to 500 fraud charges in Laurens Co., Dublin
TWIGGS COUNTY, Ga. -- Two people are in custody and could face up to 500 counts of identity fraud, the Twiggs County Sheriff's Office announced in a press conference Wednesday.
Crystal Dee Watson and Mathew George Hamilton -- accused of living off other people's identities -- face multiple charges.
Deputies say Watson's charges range from: Possession of Illegal Narcotics, Identity Theft, Financial Card Theft and Theft by Receiving Stolen Property.
Hamilton's charges range from: Obstruction, Theft by Receiving Stolen Property, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Identity Theft, Financial Card Fraud and Possession of Illegal Narcotics.
Deputies say the identity fraud includes hundreds of victims, mainly in Laurens County and the city of Dublin.
Deputies responded to a suspicious activity call at the Suburban Inn Hotel on Highway 96 in Twiggs County. They encountered Watson and Hamilton, who initially gave deputies a false name.
During a search of Watson's vehicle, investigators found more than 300 pieces of US Mail with various addresses and names on each piece of mail. They also found checks, money orders and financial cards.
Deputies say the mail had been taken from mailboxes in the Laurens Co. and Dublin areas.
The US Postal Service will be attempting to notify each customer from the mail found in the vehicle.
The US Postal Inspector will assist with the investigation and prosecution of this case.
