MACON, Ga. -- Tyson Foods in Macon announced an expansion on Tuesday that will bring many new jobs to the city.

The construction project will more than double the size of the current facility and will employ nearly 250 people by the time it is completed.

Tyson Foods Managing Director Gary Standridge said Tuesday that he expects to start accepting job applications in early Spring 2018.

"We're gonna have material handlers like we have today," he said. "We're gonna need more managers, we're gonna need more technical folks. We're bringing in some automation that's somewhat new to us so we're gonna have to find some people that understands that automation."

Construction is expected to begin this summer--as early as June--and be completed in 18 months.
