GBI investigating Gwinnett Co. PD involved shooting
BUFORD, Ga. -- The GBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting from Thursday in Buford involving the Gwinnett County Police Department.
GBI says a man was shot dead by police in the incident after pulling out what was believed to be a gun.
Gwinnett County PD were called to Peachtree Industrial Blvd. around 3:40 a.m. for a man walking along the road with a firearm.
When officers located the man -- later identified at Steven Hutchins, 27 -- they reported he had a firearm in his waistband. Officers tried talking to Hutchins for five minutes to calm him, but pulled the gun out of his waistband and began to raise it at the officers
GCPD Officer Walter Pollock then shot Hutchins in response. Officers tried to treat Hutchins, but he died at the scene.
GBI says the handgun was later found to be an airsoft replica pistol.
GBI will continue to investigate. Once completed, the case will be turned over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.
