Bears back on track with blowout win over VMI
MACON, GA -- After a heartbreaking finish last weekend in Johnson City, Bobby Lamb's Mercer Bears came out on a mission Saturday afternoon at Five Star Stadium.
After tossing a pick-six on their first possession, Mercer turned it on the rest of the way cruising to a 49-14 win over VMI.
Redshirt Freshman Kaelan Riley went 13-24 with a career high 318 yards and three touchdowns. The Bears scorched the Keydets 575 yards with 257 coming on the ground.
CJ Leggett paced Mercer with 89 yards rushing on 16 carries with a touchdown. Senior Alex Lakes became Mercer's all-time leading rusher in Saturday's win. Lakes finished the day with 48 yards on 10 carries and recorded a program-tying 30th career rushing touchdown.
Mike Kolakowski's defense stood tall surrendering only 225 yards while forcing three turnovers. Junior DB Stephon Houzah recorded two interceptions on the day.
Mercer (2-3, 1-2) returns to action next week at #11 the Citadel.
