MACON, Ga. -- The weather wasn't the only reason it was heated at Five Star Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Mercer quarterback Kaelan Riley was on fire in the 90-play intersquad scrimmage throwing three touchdown passes, two of which were to preseason All-SoCon tight end Sam Walker. Redshirt freshman receiver Tucker Cannon also impressed with a long touchdown reception from Riley.

“I’m very pleased with the offensive execution we saw today,” said head coach Bobby Lamb. “You can see we’ve got some weapons – Sam Walker had a tremendous day in particular. I thought Kaelan Riley had a really good day at quarterback with the ‘A offense.’"

A day where the offense shined, the defense seemed to struggle. The first team offense, led by Riley, scored three consecutive touchdowns against the first team defense. Cornerback Stephen Houzah had a solid day, breaking up two would-be touchdown passes.

“Defensively, we are disappointed in our intensity early on…not only on defense, but everyone," said Lamb. "This is the first heat wave we’ve had in 11 days of [preseason camp], which is very unusual for Macon. We all agreed that the heat jumped on us and lost some intensity early.”

Mercer continues to prepare for their season opener against Jacksonville on August 31 at Five Star Stadium.
