Mercer Baseball shutout in series opener at Samford

The 3 series did not get off to a great start for Mercer on Friday night. Samford blanked the Bears 7-0 to open the series. Mercer is now 26-10 overall and 6-4 in the Southern Conference. The Bulldogs won their 10th in a row.

The Bears offense was shutdown in this game with just 2 hits on the night. Samford pitcher Cody Shelton who gave up just 6 base runners while striking out 6. Brooks Carlson went 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs for the Bulldogs.

Austin Cox went 7 innings tonight for Mercer surrendering 7 hits while giving up just 1 earned run. “We couldn’t have asked for more out of Austin Cox on the mound tonight; he gave up just one earned run over seven innings against a really quality Samford team,” said head coach Craig Gibson. “Other than that, we had a couple mistakes defensively, couldn’t get a [sacrifice] bunt down and made mistakes on the base paths. Jackson Ware had both of the hits tonight for the Bears.

Up next, the two will continue the series on Saturday morning at 11 am.
